Raymond Toppins was the 1988 outdoor triple jump National Champion and was a three-time national runner-up for the Frostburg State track & field teams from 1983-84 and 1985-88. He collected seven All-American awards and earned All-American honors in each of his four seasons.

He was a member of all three of Frostburg’s National Championship track & field teams (1985-86 indoor, 1986 & 1987 outdoor) and was named an All-American in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in each of his final three years at FSU.

As a senior in 1988 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, he established a new NCAA Division III record and a Carleton College (Minn.) stadium record with a 15.67 (51 ft. 5.25 in.) meter effort. He also earned All-American honors during the indoor season after placing third at the NCAAs at 14.78 meters.

During his junior campaign, he finished as the national runner-up in both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships, garnering All-American honors in both. That season he set a program-record for the indoor triple jump (48 ft. 7.25 in.) that’s stood for over 30 years.Â

As a sophomore, he was awarded both indoor and outdoor All-American honors with a second-place finish indoor (14.71 meters) and an eighth-place finish outdoor (14.35 meters).

He won his first All-American award as a freshman in 1984 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a sixth-place effort and a distance of 14.67 meters.

He claimed two ECAC titles in the triple jump (1987 & 1988) and six Mason-Dixon championships. Overall, he earned eight All-Mason-Dixon recognitions in the triple jump and long jump.
