Baseball … Two letters in two seasons. An outstanding power hitter, Mel was a two-year transfer student. His offensive records were phenomenal: a career batting average of .373 and sluggin average of .604.

In 1970 he led the team in 12 offensive categories: game (37), at bats (126), hits (46), runs (33), doubles (10), triples (6), home runs (3), total bases (77), hit by pitch (7), slugging average (.611) and batting average (.365). His 1971 batting average of .384 also led the team.

Mel’s career batting and slugging averages each ranks 2nd on the FSU list for two year players. His 10 career triples ranks fifth on the overall list. He is tied for all-time lead in being hit-by-pitch both in a season (7) and a career (10).

All-District NAIA in 1970 and 1971. Started in the 1970 Tri-State Coaches All-Star Game at Three-Rivers Stadium.
