Baseball … Four letters in four seasons. A four-year starter at shortstop, Joe is generally regarded as F.S.T.C.’s best player of the time, usually batting 3rd or 4th in the order. He was the All-Maryland College shortstop his senior year. From available records it is known that he hit .461 in 7 of 9 games in 1939, .316 in 1940’s 10 games, and .326 in 10 of 12 games in 1941. He had numerous 2- and 3-hit games and usually led the team in doubles, triples and stolen bases. One source indicates that his career B.A. was .385.

Basketball … Four letters in four years. A four-year starter, he was the team’s second-high scorer as a freshman with 305 points. Despite incomplete records for his sophomore and junior years, he scored at least 94 points in each while being Frostburg’s playmaker. His 183 points as a senior (1940-41) was the third best on the team. A member of the 1939-40 team that won 17 and lost 4, and of a team that was 56-31 in his 4 years.

Soccer … Four letters in four years. Started all four years at an inside or outside position. Injuries caused him to miss most of his junior and part of his senior seasons. A member of the 1939 mythical “southeastern champion” team.
