Wayne Sherrard is considered the finest athlete ever to represent Frostburg State in the shot put and discus events of track and field. He established Bobcat records in the shot put (indoor: 53-5 and outdoor: 53-10.5) and in the discus (170-4) that still stood at the time of his induction, and he set FSU records in both the 35-lb. weight throw and the hammer throw that were since broken.

He earned four NCAA Division III All-America recognitions during his career as a Bobcat (1990 discus, 1991 indoor shot put and 1991 discus and outdoor shot put); his best placing in the NCAA III national championship competition was runner-up in the 1991 indoor shot put.

At the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, Sherrard won four titles in the shot put (1988, 1990, 1991 outdoors and 1991 indoors), two titles in the discus (1990 and 1991) and one title in the hammer throw (1991). Very few athletes in the illustrious history of the Mason-Dixon Conference have won as many individual championships.

Sherrard's winning marks in the 1990 discus competition and the 1991 indoor shot put established Mason-Dixon Conference records, and he was honored as the Outstanding Male Athlete in the 1991 Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championships. He received a total of 12 All-Mason-Dixon Conference recognitions.
