After three and a half years as F.S.T.C.’s best athlete, Cub left the College in early 1936 for a teaching position. Returning in 1939-40 to complete his degree he played on two of Frostburg’s greatest all-time teams – the 1939 soccer team that won the unofficial “southeastern championship” and the 1939-40 basketball team that compiled the best record in Maryland – 17-4.
Soccer … Four letters in four years, 1932-34; ’39. A starter at an inside position for all 4 seasons, he led the team in scoring in 1933 and 1934, and was among the team leaders as a 1932 freshman. There was no team in 1935. Despite the 4-year layoff from soccer he returned to a starting position in 1939 and contributed 3 goals to the 6-1 team that allowed only 3 opposition goals all season. In the 2-1 victory over the University of Maryland he scored the winning goal after assisting on the tying goal. Also scored in the win over the University of Virginia and was outstanding in the championship game at High Point College, NC.
Basketball … Five letters in five years, 1932-36; 1939-40. A great two-handed set shooter and playmaking guard…In his first four seasons at Frostburg, Cub led the team in scoring each year, even though he only played two-thirds of the final season. Although records and statistics are incomplete for that period, it is known that in this era of 10-12 game schedules and low-scoring games, he scored at least 64,86, 70 and 42 points respectively from 1932 though 1936. In 1939-40 he was one of the top reserves in Coach “Gimp” Carrington’s great “race-horse” team.
Tennis … Although F.S.T.C. did not have a tennis team at the time, Cub partially earned his educational expenses by maintaining and supervising the campus’s three courts, beginning a lifelong devotion to the game. The most significant of his many contributions to youth and sport in the past half-century have been his efforts and successes in establishing tennis interest, programs and facilities in Allegany County.
