Barbara Surgent initiated the Frostburg State University women’s track and field program in 1974 and coached through the 1997 season. She led the program to impressive heights during her tenure. The Bobcats posted a total of ten top-ten NCAA finishes – indoors and outdoors – including a best-ever runners-up showing at the 1982 outdoor championships during that time. Surgent has coached over 9 All-Americans, including four national title holders, and several ECAC All-Conference selections.

Barbara also began the women’s field hockey program in 1970. She coached the Bobcats through the 1977 season, compiling a record of 36 wins, 26 losses and 6 ties.
