Kerns Snares MEC Weekly Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Frostburg senior thrower John Kerns placed himself among the best throwers at the NCAA Division II level with his efforts on Saturday at Susquehanna and on Tuesday he was named the Mountain East Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

At the SU Orange and Maroon Classic, Kerns picked up two wins, set a Frostburg school record and became FSU's first student-athlete to hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark since the Bobcats moved to DII this fall.

A native of Easton, Md., Kerns opened the meet with a school record and win in the weight throw at 18.02 meters, 2.42 meters past the second-place finisher. He held the previous school mark in the weight throw at 17.39 meters and the distance was the 15th-longest throw in DII this season.

Kerns also won the shot put with a toss of 14.59 meters.

Kerns has won both the weight and shot put in each of the two meets this winter and the track & field teams return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Liberty Kickoff.
