Burks Takes Heptathlon Title, Men's T&F Places 3rd at MEC Indoor Championships

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Track & Field team concluded their MEC Indoor Championships across Saturday and Sunday, placing third overall in the meet.
 
For the second time in his career, graduate Marquise Burks was crowned the MEC Heptathlon Champion, earning 4,795 points across the seven events. He took first place in the Shot Put (13.03m), High Jump (1.86m), 60m hurdles (8.82), and the Pole Vault (4.17m) while not finishing below fourth in any of the other three events. He added onto his accolades in the Pole Vault, taking Honorable Mention All-MEC at 4.05m, while freshman Chase Severtson placed just above him at 4.20m to take Second Team honors in setting a new PR, as senior Ryan Schlauch then placed sixth at 3.75m.
 
In the field events, freshman Jason Pantaleon surged past his previous career-best in the long jump, taking Honorable Mention All-MEC while placing sixth in program history at 6.92m. Redshirt junior Ire Maboudou also put forward a personal record, earning spot on the podium in the weight throw at 16.49m to improve his fourth-place standing all-time, while junior Tyler McGraw took eighth in both the event and the record book at 15.22m. FSU's other throwing event in the shot put produced a trio of scoring marks, led by junior Dalton Kasekamp setting a PR of 13.97m in sixth, followed by McGraw  (13.81m) and sophomore Nick Thomas (13.81m) in seventh and eighth, respectively, each also putting up career-bests.
 
Sophomore Blake Stevens scored a pair of top-five marks in his jumping events, taking fourth in the triple jump with a 13.90 PR, then placing fifth in the high jump at 1.85m. In the former event, sophomore Dorian Grubb (13.68m) and freshman Akhili Reece (13.41m) each took scoring places in sixth and seventh, respectively, both setting personal bests.
 
During the distance events, junior Jaxon Jones had the highest placement, earning fifth in the mile with a personal record 4:17.47 that puts him sixth in the record books, while classmate Gage Osborne took seventh at 4:18.95. Jones took another scoring spot in the 800m, placing eighth in both the event and program history at 1:56.63, while junior Jack Hynes finished one spot above him at 1:56.62.
 
In the distance medley relay, the team of Jones, Hynes, Osborne, and sophomore Mason Worley took fourth at 10:15.46, setting the second-fastest mark in school history. The Bobcats closed out the meet with Hynes, freshman Felix Annan, junior Isayah Stewart, and senior Justin Dowell earning Honorable Mention All-MEC at 3:23.22.
 
Frostburg's total score of 79 points had them just four behind Point Park's 83 in second, while outpacing West Liberty (73.5) in fourth. FSU will next prepare for its outdoor season beginning Wednesday, March 25 at the Raleigh Relays and Saturday, March 28 at Towson. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
