Bobcats Take Several Top Marks Into CAC Championships

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg men's track & field team will take four of the CAC's top marks this winter into the two-day league championship meet that will be hosted at Christopher Newport University.
 
The championships open on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm with six field events, while the track events start on Friday at 4:30 pm. The second day of the CACs get underway on Saturday at 10:00 am.
 
Senior Shamar Nelson holds two of the league's top efforts on the season as he is the fastest sprinter in the 60-meter dash (7.03) and holds the best distance in the long jump at 6.98 meters (22ft. 11in.). Nelson could push for Athlete of the Meet honors with a pair of wins this weekend.
 
Joining Nelson in the 60 will be sophomore Clayton Washington and junior Kevon Adams. Washington is sixth in the 60 (7.20) and seventh in the 200 (23.15), while Adams is sixth in the long jump (6.32 meters/20ft. 9in.) and 10th in the 60 (7.31). The coaching staff will also insert Washington into the 400-meter dash as he sits at 12th in 53.19.
 
In the mid-distance events, senior Robert Romano will be hard to overlook as he's been one of Frostburg's top runners throughout his career. He carries the league's best mark in the one mile run (4:19.56) and he holds the sixth-fastest effort in the 3,000-meter run (8:52.55). Romano currently ranks third in the NCAA Division III Mideast region with his one mile time.
 
FSU will post a strong showing in the jumps with depth and talent in the 60 hurdles, long, high and triple jumps.
 
First-year Justin Dunklin finds himself throughout the CAC rankings as he's fifth in the high jump (1.85 meters/6ft. 0.75in.), eighth in the triple (11.97 meters/39ft. 3.25in.) and ninth in both the 60 hurdles (9.29) and long jump (5.93 meters/19ft. 5.5in.).
 
Senior Christian Healey holds the league's second-best effort this season in the triple jump (13.25 meters/43ft. 5.75in.), senior Matthew Robinson is sixth in the 60 hurdles (9.21) and first-year Boluwatife Toriola is eighth in the long jump at 6.11 meters (20ft. 0.5in.).
 
The Bobcat coaching staff will put teams in both the 4x400 and distance medley relays. Possibilities in the 4x400 could include Robinson, Washington, junior Tyriek Charles, first-year Demetrius Sims, junior Jacob Rickards and sophomore Devin Horseman-Guy. Frostburg's top time in the 4x400 this season sits at 3:32.60.
 
Meanwhile in the DMR, the foursome will be Sims, Romano, Rickards and sophomore Colin Flynn and the top time this winter was a 10:42.25 at Bucknell.
 
In the throws, Frostburg junior John Kerns boasts the league's top effort in the weight throw this season at 17.39 meters (57ft. 0.75in.). He has set the school record in the WT twice in four meets this season and he currently sits at first in the Mideast region and 31st in the country. Kerns will throw the shot put and enters the weekend ranked third at 13.90 meters (45ft. 7.25in.).
 
Junior Michael Belcher will join Kerns in both throwing events. Belcher is fifth in the weight throw at 14.35 meters (47ft. 1in.) and is unranked in the shot.
 
The top-two places in each event earn All-CAC honors, while the top eight places factor into the team scoring.
