SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Frostburg State men's wrestling season came to a close on Saturday, with freshman Tanner Halling earning sixth place at the National Championships and becoming an All-American in the 133-weight class.
Becoming the fourth Bobcat to qualify for nationals, Halling went undefeated in the regular season, being ranked first overall in the weight class while winning the Mount East Conference and NCAA Regional Tournaments.
In a shocking upset, Halling would take his first loss of the year in his opening match to 16-seed Dominic Ducato from St. Cloud State by a 4-3 decision. Halling would bounce back quickly to survive in the consolation bracket, defeating fellow MEC wrestler James Armstrong from West Liberty. Day one would wrap up with a 9-7 decision over Jeremiah Echevarria from Gannon, the third time that Halling has come out on top in the matchup this year.
The second day of the championships would start with a 4-2 decision over Jakob Romero from Adams State, setting up a rematch from his opening loss to Ducato. In similar fashion to the first, Ducato again took his chance with a 4-2 decision, putting Halling in the fifth-place match. In another familiar face, he would face Zachary Parker from Glenville State, suffering a third period pin to end his championships in sixth place.
Tanner Halling (26-3) placed 6th and scored 8.5 team points.
