Halling Crowned Regional Champion, Men's Wrestling Places 6th

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA. – The Frostburg State men's wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division II Regional, finishing sixth with 56.5 team points. 

For the third consecutive season, FSU will be represented at the National Championships, as freshman Tanner Halling stayed undefeated on the season to win the 133-lb bracket. Entering the tournament as the one seed and receiving an opening round bye, he won his first match by tech fall 19-4. His semifinal match was a rematch against a UPJ wrestler from a previous dual, as Halling was able to narrowly win 1-0. The championship match was against the two seed and highest nationally ranked wrestler at the weight with another rematch against Jerry Hechavarria from Gannon, as Halling was able to better the result from the previous matchup with a major decision of 12-1. 

FSU had four other wrestlers place, led by sophomore Chase Bell finishing fourth at 141. He would lose his opening match and then win three straight to get himself into the third-place match, falling just shy in a shot at nationals with a 4-1 overtime loss. Junior Gage Heilbrun would finish fifth at 149, going 3-2 on the day including a pair of wins by fall and tech fall on the day. 

Sophomore Amir Wray-Hill would start the day seeded 15th at 125, securing an immediate upset by knocking off the two seed via 11-4 decision to open his day. Wray-Hill would then win his second match with a chance to advance to the championship. He ultimately would lose by major decision to the eventual champion before receiving a win by medical forfeit in the fifth-place bout. Sophomore Andrew Wofanger would add a sixth-place finish at the 184-weight class, picking up a 10-5 decision in the consolation bracket. 

Qualifiers with be announced for the NCAA DII Championships on Monday, March 2 with brackets coming out on Friday, March 6. Nationals will take place beginning Friday, March 13 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
