FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Frostburg State women's wrestling team competed in day one of the NCAA Women's Wrestling Region Three Championships on Friday, currently sitting in sixth as a team with 40.5 points.

After the first couple rounds of competition, sophomore Amber Hunter-Snyder, freshman Chaniah Bernier and junior Maria Hiles each won their first two matches to give them a chance to advance to the championship matches.

At 145, Hunter-Snyder went into the day seeded third overall and won by tech fall 14-4 and 12-2 in her two bouts, setting up a semifinal match against the region's two seed from Delaware State.
Bernier came in as the four seed at 160 and won both of her matches by decision at 6-2 and 5-4, recovering from an opening takedown to score three points in the second period to advance. She will also have a tough test in the semis, taking on the top seed in the region and No. 3 in the country, Stella Steigler, from King.
Hiles was the fifth seed at 180 and won her first bout via tech fall at 12-2, then scored an upset pinfall over the four seed in her second match. She also will face the top seed in the region from Presbyterian for a shot at the title bout.Â

Several Bobcats also will be contention to compete for a third place match through the consolation bracket. Freshman Morgan Layman got her day started in the 117 weight class with a pin before suffering a second round loss. She picked up another pin to advance into the second day and will face of against the seven seed from Randolph. Junior Bri Holcomb took a swift 10-0 tech fall to get into the 124 quarterfinals, where she fell to the three seed in the bracket. In her consolation round, she earned another tech fall at 11-0 to move on. As the seven seed in 138, sophomore Trinity Butler won her opening match by pulling off an upset over the seven seed with a 3-1 decision. She then lost in the quarterfinals to the two seed but scored another upset with a pinfall over the eight seed just a minute into the consolation round.Â
The top three performers in each bracket will qualify for the National Championships, with those competing in the championship bouts guaranteed a spot, as well as those that win their third place bout to decide qualifiers.Â
