Holcomb, Women's Wrestling Season Ends at Nationals in Iowa

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The Frostburg State women's wrestling season came to a conclusion after the first day of the NCAA Women's National Championship.

Junior Brianna Holcomb finished third at the regional to punch her ticket to the National Championships and was seeded 11th in the 124 bracket.

In the opener, Holcomb got matched up with six seed Savannah Witt from Eastern, a rematch between the pair from a dual hosted by FSU on January 30. As had been the case in the first bout, Witt would take another victory in the matchup, winning by pinfall in the first round.

Holcomb would then wrestle Jayleah Pletz from Lock Haven to advance in the consolation bracket. After a slow-scoring first period, Pletz took a major takedown in the second, but Holcomb earned a reversal that eventually led to her winning by fall. Seeking to advance further, 13th-seeded Laura Alcantar Soto from Simon Fraser stood in her path for a chance to compete on day two. Holcomb would go up early, scoring twice to lead 4-0, however at the end of the period, she would trail 6-4. In a high-scoring second frame, Holcomb would score seven points but Alcantar Soto netted 12 to win 18-11.

Holcomb goes down as Frostburg first women's wrestler to advance to the NCAA championships in the inaugural season of official status, with FSU having previously sent athletes to the NCWWC National Tournament. As a team, the Bobcats went 8-6 in duals this season, while a tournament highlight came in winning their home Bobcat Open. Frostburg finished fifth in the Region III Championships and look to continue building for the 2026-27 season.
