Three Straight Victories Give Holcomb 3rd at Regionals to Qualify for Nationals

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Junior Bri Holcomb booked her spot at the National Championships concluding the Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team's fifth-place performance at the Region III Tournament on Saturday.

FSU began the second day of the Regional round with six wrestlers still in competition, led by junior Maria Hiles (180), sophomore Amber Hunter-Snyder (145), and freshman Chaniah Bernier (160) each qualifying for their semifinal bouts after day one. Each of the three would fall to high-ranked opponents and drop into the consolation rounds, which also featured Holcomb (124), freshman Morgan Layman (117), and sophomore Trinity Butler (138).

Holcomb began her revenge quest though a 10-0 tech fall and a 7-4 decision to book a spot in the third-place bout. She would come up against the region's three seed from Emmanuel, who had handed her the quarterfinal loss on Friday. In the rematch, Holcomb was able to flip the script, scoring the first six points of the bout before surviving a major takedown to come away with another 7-4 decision and the right to go to Nationals.

Hunter-Snyder dropped an 8-1 decision during the semis but recovered with a 10-0 tech fall in the consolations to get a shot at the third-place match. She netted the bout's first point, but three takedowns from her opponent led to a 6-2 loss and having to settle for fourth in the bracket.

Against the top seed in her bracket, Hiles was able to get out to an early 4-1 lead, however her opponent scored 12 unanswered en route to a 14-8 loss. She then dropped another close bout in a 3-3 loss on criteria in the consolation but ended her day on a high note with a pinfall to take fifth place.

After a tech fall loss to the region's top seed, Bernier lost a close battle in the consolation round, with a late point giving her opponent a 2-2 decision victory by criteria before falling in the fifth-place bout.

Starting her day in the consolations, Layman picked up a pinfall in her first bout before losing out by decision 7-5 for a shot at third place. In the fifth-place match, she overcame a first period shutout by producing on of her own in the next, securing a last-second takedown for the 3-2 decision victory. Butler wasn't able to advance any further after dropping her first consolation match 9-1.

As a team, Frostburg scored 69.5 points to take fifth overall, with three of the four teams above them all ranked in the top-10 nationally. Holcomb will now advance into the National Tournament to be held from March 6-7 at the XTream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
