FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team took first overall out of over 20 teams in hosting the Bobcat Open on Saturday.

FSU's top performer of the day was junior Maria Hiles, who won the 180-lb bracket and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. She began her day with back-to-back pinfalls to reach the quarterfinals, where she won by tech fall 12-2. In the semifinals, she fell behind early 3-0, however got a second period takedown that led to pinning her opponent, then had a much easier task in the championship, securing a 10-0 tech fall. The Bobcats had another pair of placers in the bracket, as senior Samira Stephens took seventh with three total wins, while freshman Anasette Cooper earned fifth, also picking up a trio of victories.

Frostburg had three more athletes book spots in their championship bouts, beginning with freshman Morgan Layman at 117. She earned a 9-4 decision to start the day before following up with an easy pinfall and a 13-2 tech fall before dropping the title bout by tech fall. At 124, junior Bri Holcomb breezed through her first three matches, not allowing her opponents to score a single point en route to tech falls in each one. In the championship, she began on a back-and-forth affair, trailing 7-4 after the first period before being outscored 8-0 the rest of the way for a 15-4 tech fall loss. Sophomore Amber Hunter-Snyder also eased her way into the 145 championship earning a pair of 11-point tech falls and a pin through her first three bouts. Competing for the title, she held a 2-0 lead through the first two and a half minutes, but wouldn't score again, dropping the bout 8-2 by decision.

Additionally at 110 lbs, freshman Kenaya Mwehu placed fifth after advancing to the semifinals through a tech fall and a 12-6 decision but dropped the consolation semifinal. In the 138 bracket, freshman Bliss Joyce took fifth while sophomore Trinity Butler earned seventh, as the pair combined for four pins and a tech fall. Rounding out the day at 160, freshman Naria Medrano placed fourth, taking a pair of tech falls to get to the semifinals before falling in her final two bouts.

The Bobcats will next head to Franklin Springs, Ga. to take part in the Region III Championships from Friday, February 20 through Saturday, February 21. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
