Bage, Bellarin Take Individual Titles as Men's Wrestling Wins Shenandoah Invitational

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Wrestling team placed first out of seven teams in the Shenandoah Invite on Sunday, going for a total team score of 143.5 points.

Freshman Alex Bellarin placed first in the 125-lb. weight class, winning all three of his matches with a pin, a major decision of 13-1, and a 12-6 decision over freshman teammate Axcel Barrios in the championship. Barrios pinned his first opponent of the day in four minutes, followed with a major decision victory of 15-5. Taking first and second in the weight class, Bellarin and Barrios combined for 24 team points.

In the 141 lbs class, freshman Zach Alkhatib took fifth place, receiving two wins on the day, with one forfeit and a pin in 2:21 for 11 team points. Freshman Logan Intrieri (141lbs) and freshman Gage Heilbrun (149lbs) both placed third in their respective classes, with Intrieri taking the victory in three matches with a tech fall of 15-0 and two pins, one being over Alkhatib, for 17 team points. Heilbrun came on top in four matches with a pin in 1:19 and three tech falls of 18-1, 18-3, and 20-2 for 18 team points.

Freshmen Mason Buckler (157lbs) and Liam DeBaugh (165lbs) took second and third in their respective classes, with Buckler being credited with three wins and DeBaugh racking up four. Buckler started his day off with a pin in 1:15, followed by another pin this time in 1:20, finishing his day in the win column with a 7-0 decision. DeBaugh opened his first match with a major decision of 13-5, followed by another major decision of 11-1. DeBaugh then took two more matches with two more decisions of 10-3 and 8-4. Buckler added 17 points to Frostburg's team score, while DeBaugh added 13.5.

In the 174 lbs class, freshman August Wageman took one match by pinfall in 2:05 for three team points. Freshman Charlie Turney went on to take third place with wins by major decision (23-11), two pinfalls, and a forfeit for 18 team points, while freshman Duncan Kammar finished sixth with a pinfall in 4:30 for eight team points. Freshmen Joe Colony finished fifth in the 184lbs weight class, earning six team points on three byes.

FSU had three wrestlers in the 197 weight class, with freshman Will Applegarth earning second for 17 team points in a bye and two pinfalls, one being over freshman teammate Joel Hopkins. Freshman Jeremain Henderson rounded out fifth place for 10 team points with a bye, a forfeit and an 8-1 decision victory, and Hopkins finishing sixth for seven team points on a bye and a major decision of 13-1. Junior Will Longhurst competed in the 285lb weight class, also coming in second on a bye and two pinfalls for 17 more team points. Freshman Gavin Bage took home first place in 285 for 19 total team points for the Bobcats, starting with a bye and going for a pinfall in 2:28, a decision of 8-2, and a medical forfeit over Longhurst.
