Swimming Sweeps Southern Virginia, Fall to St. Mary’s

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Both the men's and women's Frostburg State swimming teams began the new year 1-1 after victories over Southern Virginia and losses to St. Mary's.
 
The men won 105-91 over Southern Virginia and fell 112-84 to St. Mary's while the women were victorious 134-52 over Southern Virginia and were defeated 117-68 to St. Mary's.
 
The women's swimming team won a pair events and placed five in the top two while the men's team had a trio of victories and five more finishes in the top two slots.
 
The women's efforts were highlighted by a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke from sophomore Haley Benedictis (1:16.57). Benedictis also was a key part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won with a time of 4:09.19, joined by senior Elizabeth Myers, sophomore Aubree Morris, and first-year Maya Wilson.
 
Senior Megan Culbertson took home silver in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.26), and first-year Rayna Cicen had a similar result in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.09). The quartet of sophomore Gabby Thomas, junior Megan Hendershot, first-year Ana Hughes, and junior Sarah Moneypenny also finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:32.81).
 
On the men's side, junior Anthony Giuseppetti took home first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.07) and 100-yard freestyle (49.45), while junior Brady Peterson, sophomore Luke Russell, senior Hunter McFalls, and junior Jacob Tantalla won the 400-yard freestyle (3:36.40) in thrilling fashion.
 
The Bobcat men's team finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with the efforts of Giuseppetti, first-year James Harmon, first-year Quincy Page, and Russell (1:42.46), and junior Sawyer Conklin earned a second place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:01.15).
 
The swimmers return to the pool on Friday, January 24 at Bethany College with a tri-match against the Bison and Salem University. Match begins at 6:00.
