FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's track & field team looks to compete for a conference championship after a strong outdoor campaign and finishing tied for fourth in the CAC Indoor Championships in February.
The Bobcats took home team titles from the Falcon Invitational (Messiah College) and the Mason-Dixon Invitational (Gettysburg College) during the outdoor campaign.
Senior distance runner Robert Romano has won a race in all six outdoor meets in 2019 and is regionally ranked in the 800, 1500 and 5000. He is also ranked in the top five for his respective events among the CAC. At the Paul Kaiser Classic, Romano set a program record that had been held since 1982 in the 3,000-meter run.
Sophomore Clayton Washington posted top 10 times in the CAC in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races. Washington's top time in the 100, 11.05 at Messiah, ranks second in the conference. He boasts the seventh-best time in the 200 (22.56) and ninth-best effort in the 400 (51.03) entering CACs.
Junior John Kerns leads a strong throwing unit with the top hammer throw in the Mideast region (53.19 meters), while also ranking 10
th in discus (44.51 meters) and 11
th in shot put (14.46 meters). Kerns sits among the top five of the conference for each of his events.
Junior Michael Belcher is fourth in the region in shot put (45.93 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (49.69 meters). He carries the second-ranked discus throw (45.93 meters) in the CAC into the championship meet.
Junior James Naill is third in the region, 30
th nationally and first in conference for the javelin at 56.86 meters.
Junior Shamar Nelson ranks 10
th in the region in the long jump at 6.90 meters, and first-year Ratez McLaurin's 13.73-meter triple jump last weekend ranks fifth. Nelson also check in at third in the CAC in the 100-meter dash (11.07) and McLaurin is fifth in the long jump (6.66 meters).
Senior Matthew Robinson enters the CACs fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.36) and 400 hurdles (58.26).
Frostburg's 4x400 (3:24.32) has top-10 marks in the region and conference as well.
The Bobcats 4x100-meter relay team took home a gold medal at Messiah with a time of 42.90 and claiming a top-10 mark in the region and conference.
The top two finishers in each event earn all-conference earn all-conference laurels, and the top eight places factor into team scoring at CACs.
The 2019 Outdoor CAC Track & Field Championships begins on Friday with shot put, hammer throw, pole vault, triple jump and the 10,000-meter run.
