Shattuck Shatters Records At U.S. Paralympic Team Trials

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Over the weekend, Frostburg State swimmer Zach Shattuck competed for a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Team at the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Swim Trials held in Charlotte, N.C. June 30-July 2. Shattuck swam to four gold medal finishes and two Class SB6 Paralympic American records.

The rising junior competed in the 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter freestyle. He not only swam all personal-best times, but touched first in all of his events.

"Trials were an amazing atmosphere with a packed house at every session," said head coach Justin Anderson. "It was great to see so many amazing athletes who don't allow their physical challenges to limit them in any way. The athletes at the Paralympic trials were world class in every way."

On day one, Shattuck dropped over 34 seconds in the 100-meter breaststroke to swim a first place finish in 1:32.36 seconds.

"It was a really cool opportunity to be in contention for a spot on the Paralympic team and to be able to represent my country," said Shattuck. "I had a lot of fun seeing all my friends and competing at that level."

Shattuck also earned gold for his class in the 50-meter freestyle on the second day of competition in 32.71 seconds.

On the final day of trials, the Mt. Airy Md. native not only won two gold medals, but also broke two Paralympic American records in the process. Shattuck cruised to a first place and new American record in the 200-meter IM (3:01.09) before turning around to another gold medal finish and record in the 100-meter freestyle (1:13.73).

"I couldn't be more proud of all Zach has accomplished at trials and in the past 20 months. He only started swimming competitively over 20 months ago and I believe he is on pace to be one of the best in the world," Anderson said. "He makes us all proud to be Bobcats."

This year, Shattuck has now broken 30 class SB6 Paralympic Records in short-course and long-course meters and yards distances.
