Lowery Headed to NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships

FROSTBURG, Md. – After breaking the Frostburg State school record in the shot put last weekend, sophomore thrower J. R. Lowery will be heading to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Lowery, who most recently beat a field of 26 throwers at the ECAC Outdoor Championships at Springfield College, is the lone Bobcat to qualify for the NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships. He won the event with a 16.64 meter toss (54 feet, 7.25 inches) for his third win in the shot this season.

Lowery will compete on Saturday, May 23 at 11:30 am.

A five-time All-CAC selection, he currently ranks first in the Capital Athletic Conference and is tied for 10th in the nation for the longest throw in the shot.

The NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships will be held at Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex on the campus of St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. from May 21 to 23.

Frostburg State is led by eighth-year head coach Dale Luy. Luy's Bobcats finished sixth at this year's Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, where Lowery won the hammer throw and placed third in the shot.

Lowery (hammer throw) and senior Devin Francillon (decathlon) both qualified provisionally for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but unfortunately did not meet automatic qualifying standards for their respected events.

This marks the sixth time in the last eight years that one or more Frostburg State track and field athletes have qualified for the national championships and the fifth time in the last eight years that an FSU athlete has gone on to compete in the meet.
