Wilson Too Much For Bobcat Field Hockey

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State held a statistical advantage in just about every phase of the game, but suffered a 3-2 setback to Wilson in non-conference field hockey action, Tuesday.

The Bobcats, who suffered their third one-goal loss of the season, fall to 2-4 overall, while the Phoenix improve to 2-5.

FSU outshot visiting Wilson, 26-6, including a 16-2 advantage in the second half. The Bobcats even held a commanding 22-6 edge in penalty corners.

In the end, Wilson capitalized on its opportunities by scoring three goals on just six shots, including three first-half goals on just four attempts.

Senior Becky Randel attempted to jump start the Bobcat offense with a goal in the 17th minute that tied the game at 1-1 after Wilson grabbed the early lead with a score in the seventh minute.

Less than a minute later, Wilson grabbed the lead once again when Victoria Whitbred scored for the 2-1 lead. Ten minutes later, the Phoenix led 3-1 when Taylor Crouse knocked home a shot to give them a two-goal cushion.

FSU turned up the pressure in the second and appeared to have momentum on its side. The Bobcats held a 16-2 lead in shots and were awarded 14 penalty corners. Despite its efforts, FSU couldn't break through until 68:29 when Randel scored her second goal, this time from sophomore Ashley Johnson that narrowed the gap to 3-2. The hosts were unable to find the net again before the final horn sounded.

Wilson keeper Gina Wiegold stopped 12 shots, including eight in the second half during Frostburg's barrage of shots. FSU keeper Megan Grimm made two saves in the loss.

FSU returns to action this Saturday with a contest against Centre at 1:00 pm.
