SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team fell 1-0 at No. 2 Shippensburg in a midweek PSAC contest, as the Raiders scored late in the third quarter for the game's only goal.
Amidst a flurry of ranked opponents, it was FSU's third consecutive game against a top-10 team, having faced at-the-time No. 8 Slippery Rock and No. 2 East Stroudsburg in the past week.Â
The Raiders came out attacking from the get-go with McKenna Boyle putting two shots on goal in the first five minutes, with freshman goalkeeper Jenna Yazzetti stopping both in what would be the start of a busy afternoon. After six minutes of Frostburg being able to keep Shippensburg's offense in check, the hosts took three shots in a 30 second span, one that was saved by Yazzetti, the next blocked by her defense, and the third going wide. The Bobcats got in front of another effort with Yazzetti making a stop on the follow-up attempt, then inside the final 30 seconds of the quarter, SU was given a penalty stroke, with Yazzetti continuing to keep her team in the game with a diving stick save.
Shippensburg played out the second period with much of the same energy, seeing three shots in the first five minutes with one being blocked and the next two denied by Yazzetti. With their first real look at offense, the Bobcats earned a penalty corner on a counter-attack, where sophomore Kenzie Cummins' shot was blocked. Going back up the field, SU was thwarted by Yazzetti once more, as Frostburg was able to hold firm defensively until the final minute. During a hectic sequence in front of goal, Adriana Hopple tested Yazzetti who made a save, then her second effort was blocked by FSU's defense, as Anne Gardner looked to score on a third effort but couldn't get past Yazzetti to end the half scoreless.Â
Shippensburg pressed even more in the third, with one effort being blocked and the next going wide from a corner in the first minute. Yazzetti then just about stood on her head in making a triple save to keep the hosts off the board. Five minutes in, the Raiders earned a pair of penalty corners from which Frostburg blocked one and saw the next stopped by Yazzetti. The Bobcats were able to get another chance on offense four minutes later, as sophomore Brooke Saul played a pass into the area that found classmate Makenna Buffington, who swept towards goal, forcing a kick save from netminder Grace Meinke. Quickly turning possession over, SU had another effort blocked before Yazzetti made back-to-back saves on a corner. In the final two minutes, FSU was able to get their sticks in front of two shots, however on the latter one, it deflected in the air to Boyle, who was able to bat it into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Looking for an insurance goal, the Raiders forced Yazzetti into a pair of saves in the first five minutes of the fourth before putting another pair wide in the next five. Frostburg would get one late chance in the period with two minutes left, as Cummins had a pass deflected by sophomore Ava Shorkey into freshman Zoey Gibbons, who tried to beat an onrushing Meinke but put the shot wide, ending with SU taking the one-goal win.Â
The Raiders finished with 32 shots and 19 on target, as Yazzetti set a season-high with 18 saves.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 6-9 on the year while Shippensburg improves to 12-2. The Bobcats next travel to top-ranked Kutztown on Saturday, October 31 at 1 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
