Top-Ranked Golden Bears Defeat Field Hockey in Road Game

KUTZTOWN, PA. - The Frostburg State field hockey team faced No. 1 Kutztown on the road Saturday afternoon, falling by a 3-0 final.
The game would start with KU on the attack early, as freshman Jenna Yazzetti made a save two minutes in, with the hosts then earning a corner less than 30 seconds later. From the insert, the ball was fend from the top of the circle to the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats largely kept the Golden Bears at bay for the rest of the period, only allowing two more shots, as both were off target to close out the first 15.
Kutztown opened the second frame with the same intensity as the start of the first, with Yazzetti making a pair of stops in the first two and a half minutes. Four minutes later, Frostburg went on the front foot with a pair of counter-attacks resulting in a corner that senior Brianne Macchia forced keeper Lorelai Lehenky into a save, who then also thwarted sophomore Caroline Earnshaw. FSU's defense would shut down a number of late Golden Bear chances, blocking a shot and fending off three consecutive corners to maintain the one-goal game at the half.

The third quarter would feature nearly all the play taking place in Frostburg's defensive side of the field, as Yazzetti made back-to-back stops within the opening three minutes. The Bobcats blocked an effort five minutes later, the a pair of shots went wide either side of Yazzetti producing another save. With just 30 seconds left on the clock, KU pressed again and this time netted their insurance goal to go up 2-0.

Desperate to find a way back into the game, Frostburg enjoyed their most dominant period of the game to open the fourth, firing away four shots in the first three minutes. Lehenky was equally determined not to give FSU a path to a comeback, stopping Earnshaw, freshman Izzy Gibbons, and Macchia to keep her shutout bid alive. At the other end, Yazzetti blocked away a pair of shots while a corner sent another wide. Gibbons then made her way up field but couldn't get past Lehenky, as the Golden Bears would control the final five minutes. Yazzetti produced a couple saves while junior Piper Taylor cleared a shot away on the line before the hosts finally broke the resistance with their third of the day. In the last two minutes, Yazzetti had one more stop while the final shot of the contest was blocked to end with the 3-0 final.
FSU put all seven of their shots on target, while KU had 24 total shots and 15 on goal, with Yazzetti making 11 total saves.

With the loss the Bobcats are now 6-10 on the year while Kutztown improves to 16-1. Frostburg will next return home on Tuesday, November 3 for makeup game from earlier in the year against Indiana (Pa.), slated to start at 4 PM. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com.
