Rineer Hits Penalty Stroke, Yazzetti Nets Shutout in Field Hockey's Upset of #7 WCU

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team picked up a dramatic 1-0 victory over No. 7 West Chester in their regular season finale.

Prior to the game, FSU honored its nine seniors in Avery Hayden, Emma Price, Mikyla Rineer, Ella Esham, Morgan Sparks, Piper Taylor, Sofia Boyle, Brie Macchia, and Jillian Mayes as they round out their careers.

The Bobcats opened the contest with some early pressure as sophomore Caroline Earnshaw made a run down the right side and got into the arc where her shot was saved by keeper Erin O'Brien. At the other end, WCU began to take control, as freshman Jenna Yazzetti made her first stop two minutes in, then was forced into another after her defense deflected a shot. Four minutes later, the Golden Rams earned a penalty corner, where an effort came from the top of the circle and took a hit off Yazzetti before being cleared off the line by junior Taylor Korczynski.

Keeping up their attack, West Chester had a shot go off the outside of the frame of the goal before Yazzetti hit back-to-back saves a minute apart. Frostburg was able to get up field on a counter-attack, with Price being played in behind but firing wide of the goal. The Bobcat defense was called into action once more while Yazzetti thwarted another corner, then Price had one more chance with a last-second shot being saved by O'Brien.

After five minutes with neither team threatening too much, WCU took full control of the second period, with Yazzetti equal to each effort, making five saves in a five-minute span. Frostburg looked to lock down tighter defensively but kept running into waves of Golden Ram attacks, where in the last minute, one shot went wide, another was kicked away by Yazzetti, who also parried away from a corner to send the game into halftime scoreless.

The third quarter saw little in the way of chances, as the Bobcats were able to hold West Chester largely at bay, as their only effort came on a shot going wide of the mark with three minutes left. WCU started out the fourth by testing Yazzetti again on a save before Frostburg went on a quick counter to earn a corner 30 seconds later. After a scramble in front of the goal, an FSU player was brought down in the arc, giving them a penalty stroke. Rineer was tasked to step up, as she fired to the left of O'Brien and into the netting for a shock 1-0 lead.

Looking for a quick response, the Golden Rams earned a penalty corner of their own just 20 seconds after, where Yazzetti palmed away a high shot, then a minute later an effort went wide of the mark. The Bobcats were able to take some time off the clock and utilize some possession, as WCU didn't get a look for another seven minutes, where Yazzetti stopped a corner effort before her defense got in the way of another shot. FSU was able to play effectively against West Chester's desperation offense, earning a late penalty where Rineer put a shot just wide. With 15 seconds left, the Golden Rams hoped for a late equalizer but the effort was blocked and a foul gave possession back to Frostburg to hold on for the one-goal win.

WCU held a 25-5 shots advantage, putting 16 on frame where Yazzetti made 15 saves in earning her second shutout of the season.

With the win, Frostburg ends their season at 7-11 while West Chester drops to 10-7.
