FROSTBURG, Md. – Freshman Eleanor Vials scored two goals in the second half and the Frostburg State field hockey team held off York (Pa.) for a 2-0 shutout win, Tuesday.
Box Score
The Bobcats (6-10, 1-3 CAC) scored two goals early in the second half and then held on as a feisty York team refused to back down.
Sophomore Jackie Best found Vials with a pass from the baseline for the game's first goal 5:34 into second-half action. Just over seven minutes later, sophomore Ashley Johnson ripped a long-distance shot that was redirected into the net by Vials, as suddenly FSU held a 2-0 lead.
Finding themselves in a 2-0 hole, the Spartans (3-9, 0-4 CAC) turned up the pressure on the Bobcat defense. York held a 12-5 edge in shots in the second half and led 13-3 in penalty corners.
Following Vials' second goal, YCP received eight penalty corners over a six-minute stretch. Bobcat keeper Megan Grimm stepped up with five saves in the final 15 minutes of action and the Bobcat defense stymied York's second half-surge to preserve the shutout.
Grimm finished the contest with nine saves, while York goalie Abby Baker stopped 10 shots.
Frostburg State returns to action this Saturday with a home contest against St. Mary's (Md.) at 7:00 pm.
