Field Hockey Drops Tight Match to York, 3-1

FROSTBURG, Md. – A first half goal from junior midfielder Chelsea Smith (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) gave the Frostburg State field hockey team an early 1-0 lead, but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats fell to York, 3-1, on a picturesque Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

Box Score

The game-winner for the Spartans (8-5, 2-4) came on a pretty play at the 1:21 mark of the opening half. York sophomore forward Sandee Reich centered a pass from the right side through a pair of Frostburg defenders, and it was knocked in by Katie Dawkins.

Dawkins led all players with eight shots. The Bobcats (3-12, 1-3) were outshot, 24-5.

Frostburg's Smith opened the scoring less than 10 minutes in off of a rebound that bounced to her on the left side off of a penalty corner. Smith started the play from the end line, and the ball found her stick after shots by Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) and Lindsey Frost (Columbia, Md./Hammond) were turned away by goalkeeper Lydia Pirie.

Ten minutes later, Casey Lawrence tied the game for York, also from a penalty corner. The ball came loose in front, and Lawrence was there to poke it past a sprawling Maggie Edwards (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional).

Edwards made 13 saves for the Bobcats as she continues to rank among the national leaders in saves per game. Kailey Brewer netted York's third goal of the contest with six minutes to play. It was the only score of the second half.

The Bobcats return to action Tuesday evening, Oct. 12, at 6:00 p.m. when they host Stevenson.
