Stevenson Slips Past Women's Soccer, 4-3

STEVENSON, Md. - Four different players scored a goal as the Stevenson women's soccer team slipped past Frostburg State, 4-3, to give the Bobcats their first loss of the season, Saturday.

The Mustangs (3-1-1) jumped to an early 1-0 lead over FSU (3-1) when Samantha Novy netted a goal off an assist from Katie Decker just a little over a minute into play.

Stevenson held this one-point advantage over Frostburg State until freshman Erin Proctor (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls­) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from senior Lauren Lentine (Princeton, N.J. / WWP North) to tie the game, 1-1, at the 39:12 mark. Neither team would score in the remaining minutes of the first half leaving the score tied at 1-1 going into the break.

Less than two minutes into the second half, junior Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game, 2-1 after she headed a ball into the goal off an assist from classmate Heather Fleishell (Middletown, Md./Middletown). Less than 20 minutes later, freshman Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored her fifth goal of the season after she dribbled in the ball from midfield to net a goal and give FSU a two-point advantage over the Mustangs, 3-1.

At 76:53, Taylor Zimmerman blasted a shot into the FSU goal from 40 yards out to cut the Bobcat deficit to only one point, 3-2. Stevenson tied the score at 3-3 when Stephanie Eyler netted an unassisted goal two minutes later. With less than five minutes left in regulation, Melinda Kane scored the game-winning goal for the Mustangs off an assist from Allison Humphries to give the end score, 4-3.

Sophomore Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) stopped one shot in the loss for the Bobcats while Lauren Weitzman recorded four saves and Brittany Ross had two.

FSU returns to the field on September 16 at St. Vincent at 3:00 pm.
