FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with West Virginia State at home on Wednesday evening.
Â
FSU found early success down the left side early on, as senior Chelsea Pettyjohn sent one shot left of goal and had another deflected into the arms of keeper Celina Seggelmann within the first five minutes. Continuing to keep up the pressure, junior Mollie Rebuck was able to gather a ball up the right wing, turning her defender inside out and finishing past Seggelmann for a 1-0 lead at the 10-minute mark.
Â
Just two minutes later, WVSU thought they had an equalizer, as a foul from 25 yards out had Sara Paris Filter testing senior Mia Graff in goal, who was able to make a clean diving catch. Frostburg then went back on attack, with senior Madison Hinton sending a shot from a corner wide, then junior Ana Davis had a hit from distance get blocked.
Â
The Yellow Jackets fairly controlled the next 20 minutes, with one shot curling just outside the post, while a free kick from Leila Karam was blocked by the wall. Now inside the final 15 minutes, Graff made a routine save off Karam before a shot from deep went wide of the mark. The Bobcats then got themselves back up the field, as sophomore Reese Rizzo had a cross find her but put a volley wide.
Â
Off the resulting goal kick, Rachel Okoro sprinted past FSU's defense and looked certain to score but Graff was quick off her line to make a sliding save and preserve the lead. Both sides had efforts go high and wide of goal in the final five minutes, taking the game into the half with Frostburg still on the upper hand.
Â
Neither side created much in the opening 15 minutes of the second half before Frostburg was able to generate some chances. Freshman Mia Hudson put a shot just wide of the mark, then Rebuck and junior Ainsley Wilson tested Seggelman, who made saves on both. Hinton then tested her luck from outside the box but shot too close to the Yellow Jacket netminder.
Â
Approaching 15 minutes to go, WVSU put more pressure on the Bobcat defense, as a tackle inside the box was whistled for a foul and penalty kick. Okoro stepped in and shot to the right of Graff, getting just enough pace on the ball to fire past her and even things at 1-1. Now searching for a winner, a Yellow Jacket shot from just inside the box went wide.
Â
On a counterattack at the other end, freshman Kelly Dougherty used her pace to get behind the defense but had to take her run wide, as her shot missed to the right. WVSU resumed their pressure, as Karam had a shot blocked while Filter drew a save out of Graff. With just over five minutes to go, Pettyjohn made a run down the left wing and awas able to find junior Cassidy Paige's head, however she couldn't get the ball on target, as the game ended 1-1.
Â
FSU held a 13-11 advantage in shots, as both teams put five on target.
Â
With the result, Frostburg moves to 8-2-2 on the year, while WV State is now 4-3-5. The Bobcats will next hit the road to face MEC newcomers Shawnee State on Saturday, October 10 at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
