PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team cruised to a 4-0 road victory over Shawnee State on Saturday afternoon in the programs' first-ever meeting.
Â
It took just over eight minutes for either team to get into attacking play, as FSU would earn the first chance when junior Mollie Rebuck made a run down the right wing and found freshman Mia Hudson in the box, whose first-touch shot was just too close to keeper Harlee Brand. Four minutes later at the other end, an SSU long shot from distance was well held by senior Mia Graff in net. Although the Bobcats controlled much of the possession, they weren't able to create many chances, allowing the Bears to threaten again, with Genesis Guereca's effort going just wide of the post.
Â
With just over 14 minutes left in the half, freshman Kelly Dougherty sparked Frostburg into life with a high press that forced a Shawnee mistake, as she ran through one-on-one with Brand and slotted into the far corner for a 1-0 lead. Searching for more, FSU had two more hits from outside the box but both were straight at Brand in taking their one-goal lead to the break.
Â
The Bobcats came out of the second period with plenty of fresh momentum, as just 90 seconds in, Rebuck drew a fine save from Brand that went out for a corner. Senior Madison Hinton floated the ball to the back post that was missed by every player until settling for sophomore Emma Hostetler, who fired into the roof of the net to double the advantage.
Â
Four minutes later, Hinton looked to score herself on a well-taken free kick that Brand was just able to tip onto the crossbar to prevent a third. Junior Ainsley Wilson then had a shot deflected over the bar before SSU had their first real look at goal in the half, as a long ball forced a Frostburg mistake at the back, however Graff was quick out of her goal to put pressure on Madalynn Mueller, who could only fire wide.
Â
FSU resumed their control from that point, as Rebuck went on a strong run, dribbling inside and out of defenders before Brand was just able to push her goal-bound effort wide. In a two-minute spell, it looked certain that the Bobcats would net another, as Rebuck just missed the bar with a drive, then Hostetler got in behind the defense and drew a sliding stop from Brand, with Rebuck's follow-up deflected away from goal by a defender.
Â
The Bears put another shot on the board in going well wide of the mark, then four minutes later, Hinton sliced her way into the box and somehow was able to slide a pass into Rebuck while falling down, as she finally was able to beat Brand for a 3-0 lead. Now inside the final 20 minutes, a Bobcat corner kick was missed by Brand, as sophomore Reese Rizzo was the first to react on a scramble in front of goal, poking home the fourth of the day.
Â
Still searching for more, FSU kept their foot on the gas in the last stages of the game, as Dougherty missed just to the left while freshman Hallie Stansfield fired wide to the other side. Junior Rayiah Davis had the final effort, shooting high over the bar as Frostburg maintained their clean sheet with the 4-0 victory.
Â
The Bobcats held a 17-4 advantage in shots, with 12 on target to the hosts' four.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-2-2 on the year, while Shawnee State drops to 1-9-2. FSU will remain on the road as they next travel to West Liberty on Wednesday, October 14 at 5:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
