FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team began their 2026 campaign with an impressive 4-0 shutout win against Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon.
 
Neither side managed much through the opening part of the game, as the first shot didn't come until nearly ten minutes had passed in the first half, although the Bobcats made it count. Junior Cassidy Paige did extremely well to keep the ball in play just in front of the corner flag, then played back to classmate Madison Hobson who completed the third-year connection to Rayiah Davis, looping a header in that tipped off the hands of Storm keeper Morgan Vanmeter and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. LEC generated their first chance of the match just two minutes later, which missed right, before senior Chelsea Pettyjohn took an effort that Vanmeter saved.

The Storm had an excellent chance to equalize just under 17 minutes in, as Kristeena Erras drove into the box, but junior goalkeeper Kayla Doty was able to dive to her right to keep the one-on-one chance out and preserve the lead. Eight minutes later, Doty was called into action again, though this was a much easier save straight at her on a shot from distance. Over the next 10 minutes, both sides were at a deadlock for creating chances, the only effort coming on senior Madison Hinton volleying left of the goal. 

Just past the 35-minute mark, Frostburg netted another goal, as a corner kick came back out to the right wing and onto the foot of sophomore Abbey Robrecht, who crossed onto Pettyjohn's head with just enough pace to beat Vanmeter, putting the Bobcats up 2-0 and crediting Robrecht with her first collegiate assist. Still looking for more with under five minutes remaining, FSU continued their momentum with their third of the day. With Lake Erie unable to properly clear their lines, freshman Kelly Dougherty lofted a ball high in the air and into the box that bounced off the crossbar, as sophomore Reese Rizzo was the first to react, taking a calm touch before tucking home past Vanmeter, marking Dougherty's first collegiate assist to send Frostburg into the half up 3-0.

In the first ten minutes of the second half, both sides generated early chances, as junior Ana Davis fired just over the bar from a corner, while the Storm put an effort well wide themselves. Through the next five minutes, the Bobcats sent a trio of shots at Vanmeter, with the first two chances coming from junior Mollie Rebuck and the third from Paige, though none found the back of the net. The Storm then managed another chance that missed wide, followed by shots from sophomore Emma Hostetler and freshman Mia Hudson, the first going just off target and the second parried away by Vanmeter.

With just under 15 minutes to go, senior keeper Mia Graff made a pair of athletic saves, first diving to her left during a scramble after a free kick, then catching a curling effort of the boot of Ava Moore to keep the clean sheet bid alive. Now entering the final 10 to play, sophomore Audrey Meadows got her first chance of the game, receiving the ball at the edge of the box and firing a shot that missed high. FSU's defense held Lake Erie at bay the rest of the way, then added their fourth goal with just under seven minutes remaining. After a series of bounces in the box, Hudson found herself with space just eight yards from goal, passing into the bottom right corner of the net on her left foot for her first career collegiate goal. The Bobcats generated two more shots, one from Hinton and another from Rizzo, who just missed out netting a fifth, before the clock hit zero on the 4-0 win.

Frostburg held a 15-7 advantage in shots, with 10 of those being on goal compared to Lake Erie's four.

With the win, the Bobcats start the season off 1-0, as Lake Erie falls to 0-1-1. FSU is back in action on Thursday, September 3 as they face Davis & Elkins at 6 PM from Bobcat Stadium for their first MEC match-up of the season. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
