VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Tennis team concluded their Spring Break trip to Virginia Beach with a 2-1 record, defeating Shaw and Elizabeth City State and losing to Hampton.
 
Against the Division I Pirates, senior Julia Ramos secured the lone meet point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Hampton swept the doubles point as well as four of the six singles matches, with junior Claudia Coombes narrowly falling 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 at the No. 6 spot for the 6-1 final.  
 
FSU then had a doubleheader against ECSU and Shaw, starting with the Vikings. The Bobcats cruised through doubles play, with none of the three pairings losing more than two games in their sets. Ramos (6-0, 6-2) and juniors Ximena Ku (6-3, 6-1) and Patricia Castejon (6-3, 7-5) each rolled to straight-set wins at the Nos. 1-3 spots to seal the meet result. Coombes had the most impressive score, not dropping a single game in her 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 5. Junior Ella Troxell came up just shy at No. 4, falling 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker for a 5-2 score.  
 
Closing the week against Shaw, Frostburg again swept the doubles matches to take an early meet lead. Ramos won handily 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while the Bears' lone point would come at the two spot. FSU wouldn't drop another set through Nos. 3-6, with Castejon, Kush, Troxell, and Coombes all coming away with sweeps for the 6-1 final.
 
With the results, Frostburg now sits at 7-6 on the year and will return to action on Friday, March 27 for a road match against West Liberty at 3 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
