Four Score Hat Tricks in Women's Lacrosse Win Over Lock Haven

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team won 15-7 at home against Lock Haven on Wednesday afternoon.

After the Bald Eagles won the opening draw control, junior Maya Mosslih caused a turnover, leading to Emily Lamoreaux opening the game's scoring. Freshman Avery O'Hara then won the resulting draw control and classmate Delaney Burrows sank one in the back of the net to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Amos got her first piece of action when LHU had their first effort go right at her, as FSU generated their own two chances from Lamoreaux and O'Hara between a flurry of turnovers. Lock Haven's first goal of the afternoon came after a save in goal from Gretchen King, however a minute later Haney found Burrows for Frostburg's third score. With just over five minutes remaining, the Bald Eagles generated a free position chance that Amos saved before a couple of traded turnovers led to Burrows finding O'Hara to fire home. In the final minute of the period, both sides netted goals, with the Bobcats' coming from Boss after being fed by Haney, ending the frame with the score standing at 5-2.

The opening five minutes of the second frame were fairly quiet outside of two LHU shots, one stopped by Amos and the other going wide, while Boss had a free position chance that was saved by King. After FSU was put a woman down on a card, The Haven put a shot wide before turning the ball over, which Boss latched onto and went coast-to-coast to ride out the penalty and net a goal. A minute later, Lock Haven then got the resulting draw but were denied by Amos, as freshman Maddie Russell charged inside to go up by five. Over a three-minute stretch, the Bald Eagles had a trio of shots that Amos saved, as O'Hara and Lamoreaux each fired one in the back of the net 90 seconds apart to stretch the lead out to 9-2. LHU was able to find a response, winning the draw and breaking their 13-minute goal drought, as an Amos save and a couple of caused turnovers from Russell and Lamoreaux kept the score at 9-3 as the half ended.

Both sides were plagued by turnovers early in the third period, as a blocked shot and groundball pickup by Lamoreaux led to Boss netting another solo effort before Haney found the net on an assist from Russell, bringing the score to 11-3. Lock Haven won the next draw and scored within 40 seconds, however a CT from sophomore Sophie Anderson ensured they wouldn't get much more momentum. The Bobcats peppered the Bald Eagle cage with a trio of shots in a one-minute span, as freshman Chloe Zeruto and Burrows put efforts wide while Haney's was saved by King. After Frostburg was whistled for a yellow card, LHU responded with four straight shots but couldn't take advantage of the woman-up chance, as two shots missed their target while the next pair were blocked and saved by Amos. After an LHU Green card, Haney scored a man-up goal after being found by Lamoreaux, then Burrows saw her shot saved after Mosslih had a caused turnover and groundball. In the final two minutes, Lock Haven netted on a free position before Haney found O'Hara to go up 13-5 at the end of three.

Russell was denied by King on a free position shot to open the fourth, as the Bald Eagles looked to stage an improbably comeback with a pair of goals a minute apart to get within 13-7. Settling things down, Haney grabbed the draw and set up Frostburg's attack, where Burrows saw her first shot stopped by King before netting another goal after being fed by Zeruto. Frostburg continued to control possession, as shots from Burrows and Lamoreaux were both denied by King, while Amos forced a turnover out of a free position defensively. Lamoreaux picked up the loose ball and had an effort come back off the post, then with O'Hara keeping possession, the former passed to Haney to fire home for an eight-goal lead. Boss had the next DC as the Bobcats fired off four chances through the next minute, two from Haney and one each from Boss and senior Sydney Stone, each going off target. In the last three minutes, LHU had trouble holding onto the ball, while Haney was denied by the post and King, as was Stone with the final standing at 15-7.

Haney led all scorers with a trio of goals and assists for six total points, her two draw controls set the FSU career record at 243, breaking previous standout Malory Brunett's mark that had stood since 2015. Burrows, O'Hara, and Boss each netted a trio of goals, while Kelly drove the defensive effort with a game-high three caused turnovers, as Mosslih and Lamoreaux combined for 12 groundballs. Amos made 10 saves in net out of 17 shots on target, also causing a turnover and grabbing a GB.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 5-2 as Lock Haven drops to 3-2 on the year. The Bobcats are on the road Sunday, March 22, as they face Davis & Elkins at 2 PM for their MEC opener. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
