FROSTBURG, Md. – For the fourth consecutive season, the Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team secured the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship, defeating Dominican (CA) 10-8 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
In a rematch of the 2025 title game between the sides, FSU secured their spot in the final by defeating four seed Wheeling 17-9, while DUC took down three seed Charleston (WV) 15-13 in the semifinals.
Â
Frostburg's defense stepped up early on, as the Penguins took the opening draw but senior Izzy Kelly caused a turnover to set up her offense. After freshman Delaney Burrows sent two shots high and saw another saved, classmate Avery O'Hara passed to senior Daniella Boss to put home the game's first goal two and a half minutes in. Kelly secured another Bobcat possession with a CT, as after a green card was shown to Dominican, senior Neila Haney passed to classmate Sydney Stone for a 2-0 lead. DUC got themselves into the game five minutes in, getting three shots on target within 60 seconds, however sophomore Liz Amos stood tall in goal, thwarting each effort with a save.
Â
Sophomore Sophie Anderson then caused a pair of turnovers either side of senior Julia Mangini doing the same, preventing the Penguin offense from getting much momentum. With six minutes to go in the frame, Haney again turned provider, finding Burrows through the middle for a three-goal lead. Dominican finally got themselves on the board a minute later, as Morgan Newkirk went on a solo run to pull within two. As DUC looked to inch closer, an attempted shot from Kyra Evans was blocked, as her follow-through brought a yellow card for a two-minute penalty. Boss saw a shot cannon off the post, as the ball eventually made its way to Haney, who passed to O'Hara. With 40 seconds left in the period, Burrows scooped up a loose ball out of a free position and found the back of the net to put the score at 5-1.
Â
Looking for a quick response to get back into the game, the Penguins got what they needed in the first two and a half minutes of the second frame, as Newkirk and Alayna Cipolla each converted a free position to get within 5-3. Amos halted the momentum with a save, as Stone then caused a turnover to put FSU on offense. Haney had a free position saved initially, but after another foul brought a yellow card, she put home her second attempt to go back up by three.
Â
Over the next four minutes, the only action came when sides then traded turnovers, as Cipolla found Ryan Bionda for DUC to stay within two. Frostburg dominated the shot attempts after Boss nabbed a draw control, however three consecutive efforts went off target before Burrows buried a shot with Boss assisting. With 90 seconds to go in the half, Cipolla again provided a feed, this time to Olivia Johnson, as the Penguins got within 7-5 at the break.
Â
Amos was called into action within the first minute of the third period, as the sides went for three combined turnovers afterwards. Newkirk called her own number to cut the deficit down to one, as she then looked to tie the game twice in the next four minutes but was denied by Amos. Midway through the frame, Haney and Burrows put shots wide and high, as the latter then raced through on a free position to stay ahead by two.
Â
Two minutes later, a hard foul resulted in a Bobcat yellow card, as Johnson found Cipolla to stay within touching distance, however they weren't able to capitalize further, as junior Maya Mosslih caused a turnover to hold off the attack. At the other end, O'Hara got the ball at the top of the arc and somehow weaved her way towards goal, firing a shot just past the keeper, however a minute later, Evans answered with one of her own to bring the score to 9-8.
Â
A late turnover at the end of the third meant that Dominican had the first possession of the fourth, as Amos preserved the FSU lead again with a save. Frostburg's defense stepped up in a big way through the majority of the quarter, as Anderson, Mangini, and Mosslih combined for four caused turnovers, holding DUC without another shot for over 10 minutes. On a transition attack, Burrows led the charge, drawing attention from the defenders before passing low to freshman Maddie Russell, netting an all-important insurance goal to stay up by two. Looking to respond, the Penguins had an effort on cage but Amos stood in the way, as FSU gained possession with just under two minutes to go. Burrows had a shot go off the post, as senior Emily Lamoreaux picked up the groundball to reset the shot clock, then after a late turnover, Dominican wasn't able to find any late miracles, with the horn sounding on the 10-8 Bobcat victory.
Â
Burrows led all scorers on five points with four goals and an assist, while Haney added a score to go with three dimes. Mosslih, Anderson, and Kelly all had a team-high three caused turnovers while combining for five groundballs between the trio, as Amos made 10 saves in goal.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 16-3 on the year, while Dominican ends their season at 11-4. FSU's win total set a new program record which had stood since 1991, as they now advance into the NCAA Tournament, where they will face three seed West Chester on Thursday, May 7 at 2 p.m. from East Stroudsburg, Pa.
