Hilltoppers Able to Hold Off Women's Wrestling in Narrow Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team fell just shy in their home dual against West Liberty 22-19 on Friday evening.

WLU began the meet with an immediate advantage, taking a forfeit at 103 for a five-point buffer. Freshman Kenaya Mwehu wasted little time getting the Bobcats on the board in the first bout at 110, needing just two minutes to secure a 10-0 tech fall. The Hilltoppers responded with one of their own at 117, then at 124, junior Bri Holcomb enjoyed the third consecutive 10-0 score to bring the match to a narrow 9-8 West Liberty advantage.

Furthering their lead, WLU picked up a pinfall at 131, however back-to-back decisions by sophomores Trinity Butler (11-10) and Amber Hunter-Snyder (7-0) got FSU back some momentum with the score now standing at 15-14. West Liberty regained the upper hand at 160 and 180, earning decisions of their own at 5-1 and 12-7 but Frostburg picked up a pair of team points in each bout to just stay alive, though trailing 21-16.

Coming down to the final bout at 207, junior Maria Hiles was able to overcome a slow start to take a 5-2 decision, though it wouldn't be enough to tie the match, as the Hilltoppers came out 22-19 winners.

With the loss, FSU drops to 8-5 on the year, while WLU improves to 16-6. The Bobcats will remain at home for their final dual meet of the season against Eastern on Sunday, January 25 at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
