Women's Wrestling Secures Pair of Wins at Tiffin Duals

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team went 2-2 at the Tiffin Duals on Saturday, defeating Hiram and Otterbein while falling to No. 22 Tiffin and No. 10 Northern Michigan.
 
Beginning the day against the host Dragons, TU took a 15-2 tech fall at 110, with freshman Morgan Layman responding with a pinfall at 117. Tiffin began to assert control with three consecutive pins before the Bobcats tried to get themselves back into the match. Sophomore Amber Hunter-Snyder (10-0) and freshman Chaniah Bernier (11-0) earned back-to-back tech falls at 145 and 160, respectively, while junior Maria Hiles picked up a 4-0 decision to put 13 points on the board. Despite the momentum, FSU had to forfeit at 207, giving TU the match victory.
 
Frostburg trailed early with a forfeit at 103 against Otterbein, however freshman Kenaya Mwehu, Layman, and freshman Ella McDonald picked up three consecutive pins at 110, 117, and 124 to go up 18-6. The Cardinals were able to take a fall of their own at 131, but FSU turned up another gear from that point. In the final four contested bouts, sophomore Trinity Butler and freshman Reise Roach took pinfalls at 138 and 160, respectively, while Hunter-Snyder (8-5) and Hiles (9-0) each earned decisions to close out the Bobcats' first win of the day.
 
FSU rolled their momentum into the next match, as after Hiram forfeits at 110 and 117, McDonald needed just a minute for a pin victory at 124, while sophomore Nadia Ungurean took a 12-6 decision at 131. Hunter-Snyder and Roach kept the Bobcats rolling with back-to-back pins at 145 and 160, respectively, as the Terriers ended things with a narrow 3-2 decision at 180 and a forfeit at 207.
 
Closing out against the 10th-ranked Wildcats, FSU was given a quick 12-0 advantage after receiving forfeits at 110 and 117. In the first contested match at 124, junior Bri Holcomb was able to come away with a 7-4 decision before Ungurean earned a pinfall win at 131, putting the Bobcats in command 21-0. NMU began to fight their way back, earning nine total points with an 8-2 decision at 138 and a fall at 145. In a tightly-contested 160 bout, Bernier just fell shy in a 5-5 decision loss with her opponent scoring with seven seconds left. Northern Michigan then secured their complete comeback with a pin at 180 and a 6-0 decision at 207, winning on criteria with a 21-21 match score.
 
With the results, Frostburg now sits at 8-4 in duals on the year and will next have their home opener against West Liberty on Friday, January 16 at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
