Diallo Qualifies for National Tournament After Regional Championship Appearance

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's wrestling team competed at NCAA  DII Super Region 1 on Saturday, finishing in sixth place overall. 

The regional was made up of 11 schools featuring four schools ranked in the top 25 of the NWCA, including Pitt-Johnstown (11), Gannon (19), and Kutztown (22), Millersville (25), with Mercyhurst receiving votes. 

Frostburg put up 56.5 points in an impressive showing as a team in its first year of the return of Bobcat men's wrestling. Individually, junior Thierno Diallo led FSU on the day, making it to the championship match of the 133-weight class after a decision in the quarterfinal and major decision in the semifinal. He would come up just short against his fourth-ranked opponent in the class by a 6-1 decision, though Diallo will still represent FSU at the national championships, qualifying as a top-three performer at the tournament.

The next highest finish came from freshman Gavin Baige, who placed fourth at 285 lbs, just missing out on third place in a 2-0 decision loss. Freshman Duncan Kammar and redshirt sophomore Nick McCarthy also picked up multiple wins for the Bobcats on the day, coming fifth and sixth, respectively at 174 and 184 lbs. 

Diallo will travel to Park City, Kansas for the NCAA Division II National Championships, which will be starting on Friday, March 15. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com
