Women's Rugby Hosts First Home Match Against West Chester

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's rugby team played the first home game in program history against West Chester, falling 37-12.

On a cold rainy day in Frostburg, the women's rugby program made history playing its first home game. Despite the weather, the Bobcats had a great turnout from the FSU fans. The Golden Rams controlled possession to start the game, getting on the board first in the corner of the try zone. The conversion failed to go in, leading to an early West Chester lead of 5-0. The Golden Rams continued to keep the ball away from the Bobcats scoring twice more and adding one of their conversions for a 17-0 lead in the first half.

FSU earned their first home try, moving the ball down the field after breaking free from a scrum near midfield. The try was made when the Bobcats swung the ball from one side of the field to the other with sophomore Liberty Cawthorn putting FSU on the board. Freshman Rylee Rodrigues then made a nice conversion from a tough angle, splitting the uprights right down the middle. After the try and conversion the score was 17-7 West Chester. The Rams added one more try and conversion to end the half.

The second half started at 24-7 Golden Rams and with the rain coming down stronger as the game continued. The Bobcats scored early into the second half with a run from Rodrigues up the middle from about 20 meters out. The conversion was missed with the match now standing at 24-12. West Chester would add a penalty kick, along with another try and conversion in the second half, as the final score of the match was 37-12.

The Bobcats didn't come away with the win but did have a good showing in the rain in front of a good home crowd. FSU moves to 0-2 on the early season and West Chester picks up its first win at 1-2. FSU returns to play next Saturday when they travel to play Army in Emmitsburg, Md. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
