Alcala, Diaz, Barun Impress for Men's Tennis at ITA Atlantic Regional

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Men's Tennis team began their season at the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament on Thursday, with a few athletes advancing into Friday's matches.
 
The doubles pairing of sophomores Cole Alcala and German Diaz began their opening day with a bang, winning their first round 6-4 before pulling out a 7-5 victory in the next round to advance to the quarterfinals the next day. There, they faced the reigning PSAC champions in Edinboro, who were too much to handle in a 6-1 loss.
 
Diaz would also advance furthest in singles play, winning 6-2, 7-6 in round one before a marathon 7-6, 5-7, 10-4 tiebreak win in the round of 32. His tournament would come to an end in the round of 16, as he was forced to retire due to injury in the match.
 
Alcala and freshman Peter Barun also won their opening singles matches, with the former earning a 6-4, 6-3 decision and the latter victorious 2-6, 6-0, 10-2. Neither could advance past the round of 32, both falling in straight sets to conclude FSU's tournament.
 
The men will begin match play on Saturday, September 30 for a home match against UVA Wise at 3 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
