FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Rugby team earned their first-ever victory by defeating Kent State 37-17 on Saturday.
Â
Prior to the game, the Bobcats honored seniors Kiley Day and Jada Malone, a pair of players who are rounding out their careers having helped to establish the program for the University.
Â
In the cold and rain, FSU immediately struck just after the two minute mark, with sophomore Camryn Wyatt charging through the lines and easily scoring the try for a quick 5-0 lead. Not to be outdone, the Golden Flashes struck back just two minutes later, as Bri Schneider ran in to tie the match at 5-5.
Â
Midway through the half, KSU piled on the pressure, scoring another try and making the conversion for a 12-5 lead. As FSU struggled to gain momentum on offense, Kent State made it a 17-5 contest inside the final 10 minutes, looking to close out the half on a high. Sophomore Liberty Cawthorn helped flip the script, however, scoring inside the four-minute mark to give the Bobcats a lifeline at 17-10 going into halftime.
Â
Frostburg came out a reenergized side in the second half, as Cawthorn made her second try of the day in the first five minutes, followed by a conversion from freshman Rylee Rodrigues to tie things at 17-17. Freshman Kylie Legaretta then gave FSU their first lead since the start of the match, stealing the ball near the try zone and running in for a 22-17 advantage.
Â
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Malone made it a day to remember, scoring a try on Senior Day to go up by two scores at 27-17. Cawthorn put any hopes of a Golden Flashes comeback to bed inside the last four minutes, running in a pair of tries for the final 37-17 scoreline.
Â
With the win, Frostburg now stands at 1-4 in their inaugural season and will face New Haven in their final match of the year on the road Sunday, October 29 at 11 a.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
