WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Frostburg State swimming teams opened up 2019 with a sweep of Gallaudet on Saturday. The women won their half 148-63 while the men dominated 174-76.
The women got standout performances up and down the lineup. The Bobcats started the morning with victories in both of the 200-yard medley relays. First-year Rayna Cicen, sophomore Aubree Morris, and seniors Megan Culbertson and Becca Marsh combined for the women.
For the men, first-year James Harmon, sophomore Luke Russell, and juniors Anthony Giuseppetti and Brady Peterson won the 200-yard medley relay, with Russell making the trek at 22.95 seconds.
The Bobcats would then go on to win the next 15 events of the day, and 22 of the first 24 events.
The quartet of Cicen, Culbertson, Morris, and Marsh also dominated their individual events. Cicen finished first in the 50 and 100-yard backstroke along with the 50-yard freestyle.
Culbertson triumphed in the 100-yard breaststroke, Morris won the 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly, and Marsh was victorious in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles.
Junior Megan Hendershot claimed victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle, edging out first-year teammate Sydney Coval who finished in 2
nd place. Coval was also second in the 100-yard freestyle trailing Morris.
First-year Maya Wilson finished second in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles behind Marsh. She also finished the 100-yard butterfly behind Coval. Ana Hughes also claimed silver in the 50-yard backstroke only trailing Cicen.
On the men's side, Harmon went 2-0 on the day with more victories in the 50 and 100-yard breaststrokes. Junior Cayden Abramovitz and first-year Nate Bowman followed Harmon in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Giuseppetti won the 100-yard butterfly and narrowly missed a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
Sophomore Adam Stein and junior Sawyer Conklin dominated the men's 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing in first and second respectively. They were over 1:34 ahead of third place, and over six minutes ahead of fourth.
Three Bobcats took the first three slots in four different events. Senior Hunter McFalls won the 200-yard freestyle, followed by Russell and first-year Myles Henderson.
Luke Russell was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle ahead of senior Matt Whelan and sophomore Jacob Tantalla.
Harmon went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke ahead of Tantalla and Stein.
Finally, Henderson claimed victory in the 500-yard freestyle ahead of Conklin and Peterson.
First-years Matthew Costa-Shell and Jake Russell finished first and second in the 50-yard backstroke.
In the 100-yard freestyle, first-year Quincy Page won his first collegiate event in the 100-yard freestyle, beating out his teammate and second place finisher first-year Nate Bowman. Page also won the 50-yard butterfly over Whelan.
The Frostburg State swimming teams have a three-week break in between meets before traveling to Pittsburgh to take part in the Chatham Invitational on October 26 at 12:00 p.m.
