FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's and women's swimming teams each opened the 2018-19 season with a victory over Gallaudet University in Bobcat Natatorium on Saturday.
The FSU men's team won by a score of 143-90, and the FSU women's team won 170-62. This meet was the season opener and home opener for both teams, who now hold 1-0 records on the season.
The women's team took home 10 individual wins and one relay victory while the Bobcat men earned seven first-place finishes and one relay triumph.
For the Frostburg State women's team, senior Maddie Weinberger captured first place in the 50-meter breaststroke (35.28) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:17.62). Junior Becca Marsh joined Weinberger with two individual wins in the 200-meter freestyle (2:22.70) and 400-meter freestyle (5:05.98).
Sophomore Meaghan Doyle took first place in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 11:17.23, and classmate Katie Culbertson won the 50-meter backstroke for the FSU women with a time of 39.15.
First-years Aubree Morris and Haley Benedictis were both winners in their Frostburg swimming debuts. Morris won the 100-meter butterfly (1:14.43), and Benedictis won the 50-meter freestyle (29.51).
Junior Elizabeth Myers took first place in the 100-meter freestyle (1:08.94), and senior Emily Turner won the 100-meter backstroke (1:14.40).
The Bobcats also won the 200-meter medley relay, with a team of Turner, Weinberger, Morris and junior Valerie Yoder finishing with a time of 2:14.09.
For the FSU men's team, sophomore Luke Holloway won the 50-meter backstroke (30.65) and the 100-meter freestyle (55.74).
Sophomore Cayden Abramowitz won the 50-meter breaststroke (35.68), sophomore Anthony Giuseppetti won the 50-meter freestyle (26.33) and first-year Cameron Edwards won the 200-meter freestyle (2:11.48).
Sophomore Brady Peterson finished first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:20.52), and fellow sophomore Sawyer Conklin won the 400-meter freestyle (4:55.58).
The Frostburg State men's 200-meter medley relay team of Giuseppetti, Holloway, Peterson and first-year Luke Russell also took first-place with a time of 1:55.64.
Both the Frostburg State men's and women's swimming teams will compete in their second meet of the season on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2:00 pm at home against Goucher College.
