Frostburg Swimming Opens Season With Wins, Women Break Records

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – In its 2016-17 season-opener, the Frostburg State men's and women's swim teams swept both Hampden-Sydney and Barton, Saturday afternoon.

The men slipped past Hampden-Sydney 133-128 and Barton 135-121, while the women downed Barton, 204-32.

The Bobcat women opened up their season not only with a win in the 400-medley relay but also a new team record. Sophomore Emily Turner, sophomore Maddie Weinberger, freshman Elizabeth Myers and junior Macey Nitchie took the top spot in a time of 4:51.36. They also broke the previous Bobcat record of 5:01.84 held by Maci Quintanilla, Kait Donch, JackieFranzak and Nitchie set in 2014.

The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Myers, Turner, freshman Becca Marsh and Nitchie also swam to a first place finish and a new FSU team record in 4:25.38. The new record bests the previous record of 4:33.83 set in 2008 by Thirza Roberto, Keisha Lewis, Michelle Nash and Arielle Harding.

Turner went on the win both the 50-meter and 100-meter backstroke events in 33.40 and 1:14.54 seconds, respectively.

Weinberger opened up her sophomore year debut with wins in the 50-meter breaststroke (33.75), 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.51) and the 100-meter IM (1:12.37).

Nitchie also picked up three more wins on the day in the 50-meter freestyle (28.71), 100-meter freestyle (1:04.92) and she was the anchor of the first-place 400-meter freestyle relay.

Marsh opened her career as a Bobcat with a first-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle (2:26.71) and second in the 50-meter butterfly (34.12).

Along with both relays, Myers also won the 50-meter butterfly (34.04) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:16.05).

On the men's side, junior Zach Shattuck continued his record-breaking ways as he broke Paralympic American records in the 50-meter breaststroke (45.63) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:35.91).

Sophomore Christian Match opened his junior year campaign with wins in the 50-meter breaststroke (30.85), the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.08) and the 100-meter IM (1:02.87). He was also a part of the second-place 400-meter medley relay team of freshman Jacob Auerbach, senior Alek Combs and junior Darnell Hungerford.

Auerbach also collected two second-place finishes in the 400-meter freestyle (4:42.98) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:07.23).

Sophomore Daniel Ryczek swam to a second-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle in a time of 10:09.17.

The Bobcats will return to the pool for a quad-meet Saturday, October 22 against Hood, Stevenson and Goucher. The meet will be held at Goucher and is set to start at 1:00 pm.
