Women's Track & Field Competes at Cal U Early Bird Meet

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – After the scheduled outdoor season-opening meet was cancelled, the Frostburg State women's track and field team competed at the Cal U Early Bird meet, Saturday.

Freshman Zoe Harris had one of the best finishes of the afternoon for the Bobcats as she took first in her heat and finished fourth overall in the javelin with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 36.16 meters (118' 8") in the first outdoor meet of the season. Prior to the javelin, Harris took second in her heat and 21st overall in the shot put with a distance of 9.32 meters (30' 7"). Classmate Elaine Saxton finished third in her flight and 22nd overall (9.07m/29' 9.25").

Sophomore Tiffany Cancel set a new personal best distance in the discus as she won the event with a toss of 37.11 meters (121' 9"). Cancel was just .39 meters shy of the ECAC qualifying standard. She later took ninth in the hammer with a distance of 34.39 meters (112' 10") to take first in her heat.

On the track, freshman Brianna Wilson took first in her section of the 100-meter dash and finished 11th overall with a time of 12.99. Classmate Kayla Truesdal also took first in her heat of the 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.22 to take fourth overall.

Sophomore Casey Columbus and senior Gabbi Maher finished back-to-back in the 5,000-meter run and Columbus took ninth (20:55.06) and Maher finished 10th (20:55.81).

Sophomore Alexis DeVault finished ninth in the longest run of the event as she crossed the finished line at 43:50.24 in the 10,000-meter run.

In the hurdles, freshman Erin Early took fourth in her heat and 12th overall in the 100-meter race with a quick time of 16.16. Sophomore Amy Virostek took second in her section and eighth overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.36.

The Bobcats return to action next Saturday when they travel to the Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University.
