2015-16 Bobcat Swimming Season Preview

FROSTBURG, Md. - Coming off a record-setting 2014-15 season, head coach Justin Anderson has a lot to look forward to and big expectations for the Frostburg State men's and women's swimming teams in the 2015-16 season.

In Anderson's second season with the Bobcats, he led both the men's and women's squads to the most successful finishes in Frostburg history at the CAC Championships; both teams finished in sixth place and scored more points than ever before. He guided the women to breaking five school records; including three individual records by freshman Macey Nitchie and two relay records.

On the men's side Anderson coached freshman Christian March to two record-breaking performances as well as earning an NCAA "B" cut, the first in 20 years for the Bobcats. Anderson capped his record-breaking season by making history once again, as he led his women's team to capture Frostburg's first-ever points at the ECAC Championships in March.

This season should prove to be nothing less than another record-breaking year, as both of Anderson's teams display more depth than ever before. The men's team boasts 21 swimmers including eight returners and 13 newcomers. While the women feature a 19 swimmer roster, returning six and adding 13.

"Win more dual meets, improve our standing, score more points at the conference championship and continue to break records," remarked Anderson on his goals and expectations for the upcoming season. "Our theme this year is every race, every place, meaning whether you are a top scorer or not, every point helps. I want the team to focus on each individual race to get as many points as possible so we can be competitive in every meet."

As both teams prepare for their first meet of the season Oct. 17, the newly added depth on both sides will prove to be key. "This will be the first year we will be able to field a full squad in every single event which will be exciting going into our first meet" said Anderson.

The Frostburg state women's swim team enters its 2015-16 season behind the record-breaking performances of sophomore Macey Nitchie as well as other key returners in Sydney Fazenbaker, Chrissy Alessandrini and new freshmen Bobcats Maddie Weinberger and Emily Turner.

Nitchie returns as the Bobcats top-scorer as well as the school record holder in the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles and as the freestyle leg in the record breaking 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays. "She should continue to improve even more this year," said Anderson. "She had some pretty drastic drops over last season and will be competitive to win a conference championship in each of her individual events this season as well as continue to break school records."

Fazenbaker will return as a breaststroke scorer for the Bobcats and will continue to score points for the Bobcats in those events as well as improve in the distance and sprint freestyle events.

Alessandrini, a senior, will return as a versatile swimmer for the Bobcats, she will serve as an integral part in the Bobcat free events, as well as in the IM and butterfly events for the Bobcats.

Weinberger will fill a gap for the Bobcats in the breaststroke events, after the graduation of top Bobcat breaststroker Kaitlyn Donch. Her incoming times will place her on pace to break some of the Bobcat school records and will put her as a top performer in those events at the conference championship.

Freshman teammate Turner will enter the Bobcat lineup as a top distance freestyle and backstroker for the Bobcats and should be a conference finalist and contributor throughout the season for FSU.

A Glance on the Men's Side:

Anderson is confident that his 2015-16 Bobcat men are the strongest they have been in a decade. He returns top-scorer and record holder Christian March as well as Bobcat contributors, James Williams, Alek Combs, Marquell Proctor, Christian Blocker and Deionn Yarberough. The Bobcat men welcome freshmen Sidney Horton and Mike Jones to the lineup as potential top-scorers for FSU.

March will enter his sophomore year holding both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke records for the Bobcats, as well as earning a NCAA provisional time in the 100-yard breaststroke, the first Bobcat to do so in 20 years. He will continue to be a top-scorer for the Bobcats and is expected to improve in the breaststroke events as well as the sprint freestyle events, and is on pace to break the 50-yard freestyle record; he was just shy of the record last season. "He should look to compete for a couple of conference championships, as well as qualify for NCAA's in both the breaststroke events as well as the sprint freestyle events," said Anderson.

Williams will continue to be a force in the backstroke events and will look to be a conference finalist for the Bobcats. Combs will enter his junior season as a butterfly specialist for the Bobcats as well as a contributor in the distance free events and will look to make conference finals for his third-straight year.

Proctor, Blocker and Yarberough will look to improve in their individual events this season as well as add depth to the Bobcat relays to earn points for FSU.

Horton, a newcomer looks to be a top-scorer in the sprint freestyle events and will be a big point contributor for the Bobcats in those events as well as relays. Jones will also enter his first season as a Bobcat and he will look to contribute as a top butterflier, IMer and relay member as the Bobcats look to qualify their first ever relay for the ECAC Championship.

Sophomore Zach Shattuck will enter this season after coming off a summer of competing internationally at the Parapan Am, and will continue to excel and tear down U.S. Paralympic records as he looks to make his way to Rio for the 2016 Paralympic Games.

Anderson will go into the 2015-16 season with more depth in the coaching staff as well, with the addition of recent Virginia Tech grad, Rebecca Yost. He also will return James Martin to the coaching staff who was a key part of Anderson's success in the 2014-15 season as well as with the recruiting efforts for the new season.
