WESTMINSTER, Md. – Frostburg State senior Courtney Abell scored in the 85
th minute to carry the Frostburg State field hockey team to a dramatic 2-1 win over McDaniel in the season opener for both schools, Friday.
Box ScoreWith the contest knotted at 1-1 through the end of regulation, Abell and the Bobcats capitalized on their only opportunity of the extra frame. Frostburg earned three penalty corners before sophomore Taylor Bowen found Abell with a centering pass from the left side for a breakaway goal. It was FSU's only shot in overtime.
McDaniel outshot the Bobcats 17-6 and held a 17-10 edge in penalty corners. However, it was the Bobcats that opened the season with a win for the third time in four years.
Junior Jackie Best opened scoring action when she connected on a shot off the stick of junior Ashley Johnson. Frostburg earned a penalty corner at 33:34 when Bowen found Johnson before connecting with Best for the 1-0 lead.
Frostburg held the 1-0 lead until late in the second half. The Green Terror broke through with their only goal with 4:05 showing on the clock when Gabrielle Yore gathered a shot from a scramble in front of the net and scored to send the contest to extra time.
Bobcat keeper Jacqueline Gover made 10 saves in her first collegiate start in net. Calia White made just one save in the loss.
Frostburg State returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Dickinson at 5:00 pm.
