Offense Carries Baseball To Win Over Mary Washington

FROSTBURG, Md. – A four-run seventh helped propel the Frostburg State baseball team to a 12-8 victory over Capital Athletic Conference-foe Mary Washington, Wednesday.

Box Score

The Bobcats (16-5, 6-3 CAC) came to bat in the seventh having just watched a five-run lead disappear after the Eagles (12-13, 2-8 CAC) were able to plate five in the top half of the inning. Tyler Truslow delivered the tying hit for UMW with a single through the left side that brought home James Sink. However, with the score 8-8, Frostburg was able to push across four runs to gain a decisive 12-8 advantage.

Frostburg junior Nick McElfish came up with no outs and a man on first and crushed a triple to left center that drove in sophomore Zach Keeler for what turned out to be the winning run. The next batter was junior Zach Weiss and he drove McElfish home with an RBI single to right field. Later in the inning, junior Kam Stewart delivered two more insurance runs with a triple off the center field fence. That was all the Bobcats would need as the Eagles went three up three down in the eighth and stranded runners on the corners in the ninth.

FSU led the majority of the contest, but Mary Washington was able to grab the early led off Frostburg starting pitcher Ryan Redinger with two unearned runs in the first. Jono Haught doubled to right field to bring home the first run for the Eagles, and then later in the inning James Sink delivered an RBI single to center for the early 2-0 edge.

The lead was short-lived for UMW, as Frostburg bounced back with two in the first and four more in the second. Junior Ricky Castro reached base with a one-out walk and later in the inning scored on a wild pitch. Stewart tied the game up in the first with an RBI groundout to the shortstop. Castro came up in the second with the bases full and went opposite field down the left-field line for a two-RBI double. Three batters later, Stewart plated two more Bobcats with a single to right field.

Frostburg tacked on a single run in the third off an RBI single from senior Kevin Kean, and then another run in the fourth when junior Ricky Brady homered to right center. The Eagles also plated a run in the fourth, so after four the score was 8-3 and remained that until the game-deciding seventh.

Senior Austin Poretz (4-1) picked up the win for Frostburg after pitching 1.1 innings in relief of Redinger. Redinger finished with a no decision after allowing six runs (four earned) and recording eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.

Andrew Slupek fell to 0-2 for the Eagles after pitching two innings in relief and allowing just one unearned run.

Eight Bobcats recorded at least one hit on the day, including five players who had multi-hit games. Weiss posted a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a double, two runs and an RBI. Stewart picked up five RBIs behind a 2-for-5 day with a triple. Kean and McElfish each picked up two hits, two runs and one RBI on the day.

Frostburg returns to action on Friday when it travels to face Penn State Altoona at 3:00 pm.
