Bobcats Pick Up Comfortable Win Over Catholic

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team will be riding a four-game winning streak as it enters the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament after a comfortable win over Catholic by a score of 14-3, Sunday.

The Bobcats (23-8) took control of the game early over the Cardinals (16-13) as they scored in each inning from the second to the fifth. A total of nine runs crossed the plate in those four innings for FSU.

After Frostburg scored a single run in the second off of a sacrifice fly from junior Lane Farmer, it was able to break the game open with five runs in the third. The Bobcats sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and collected six hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. The big hit in the inning came from junior Ricky Brady who came through with the big two-run double to left field.

FSU was able to plate two more in the fourth with a two-run double down the right field line from Farmer, and a single run in the fifth when senior Kevin Kean picked up an RBI single down the left field line.

Freshman Ryan Callahan started on the mound for the Bobcats and improved his record to 2-1 after pitching seven strong innings and allowing just three runs (two earned), three hits, and recording three strikeouts. The Cardinals were only able to score a single run off of Callahan in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Frostburg put the game to bed with five more runs in the eighth. Sophomore Connor Cooper and senior Rob Jennings each picked up RBI singles in the inning.

Sophomores Kyle McCormack and Zach Lawhorn each pitched an inning as they combined to pitch the final two scoreless frames to secure the Bobcat victory.

Sean Van Gieson fell to 1-2 for the Cardinals after surrendering six runs and six hits in 2.2 innings.

Farmer led Frostburg offensively on the day as he went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Kean also picked up three hits on a 3-for-5 day with two runs scored and one RBI.

The Bobcats return to action on Tuesday when they travel to play No. 3 seed Christopher Newport in the first round of the CAC Tournament at 3:30 pm.
