Volleyball falls to No. 13 Christopher Newport

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team lost to the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action, Friday night.

The Bobcats fell to CNU by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.

CNU (21-3, 3-0 CAC) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set and held that lead to take a 1-0 lead over Frostburg (10-14, 0-3 CAC) in the match. Junior Aimee Petrides led the Bobcat attack in the first set with five of her nine kills in the match.

The Captains took a quick 3-0 lead in the second set before freshman Naya Cheatem sandwiched a pair of kills around a CNU point to pull the Bobcats to within one, 4-3. The Captains pulled away with a 10-3 run to take a 14-7 lead. Christopher Newport continued to build on its lead and take the second set, 25-16.

Frostburg State would not go quietly, however, as the Bobcats continued to fight back in the third set. After trailing 15-9, Frostburg State chipped away at the lead behind the strong serving of Madelyn Torres. Torres served three straight aces to pull FSU to within three, 15-12, before a kill from Petrides cut the CNU lead to two points, 15-13. After a back-and-forth point run, senior Morgan Hoover recorded her seventh kill of the match to cut the lead to 20-19 in favor of the Captains. CNU held off a feisty Bobcat team at bay and used a 5-2 run over the last seven points of the match for a 25-21 win in the final set.

Petrides led the Bobcats with nine kills in the match while Torres dished out 19 assists. Freshman Lindsey Scepura paced the FSU defense with 16 digs on the evening.

The Bobcats return to the court next Wednesday when they host Penn State Harrisburg in CAC action at Bobcat Arena at 7:00 pm.
