FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team used 17 service aces to power its way past Penn State Harrisburg, 3-0, in Capital Athletic Conference action, Wednesday night.
The Bobcats (11-14, 1-3 CAC) jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the opening set with freshman Madelyn Torres at the service line as she severed three of the seven Bobcats aces to open the match. FSU built a 15-6 lead after a kill from Torres before Penn State Harrisburg (1-19, 0-4 CAC) mounted a comeback to pull within four, 15-11, but another quick kill from Torres gave the Bobcats the serve back as junior Caitlyn Collins finished out the set at the service line. The 9-0 run for FSU was highlighted by a pair of kills from junior Aimee Petrides and freshman Sabrina Roberts. FSU took the first set, 25-11.
Frostburg State was once again dominate at the service line in the second set as three different players recorded an ace for FSU, including four more from Torres to open the set and give FSU a 8-2 lead. Freshman Megan Wentz added a pair of aces during the Bobcats 7-3 run to give the host's a 16-6 lead. Petrides closed out the set for Frostburg at the service line and freshman Naya Cheatem put the set away with her fourth kill of the match to hand FSU the 25-11 win.
The Bobcats continued their strong serving into the third and final set as freshman Lindsey Scepura served eight-straight points as FSU opened the set on an 8-0 run. The Lions answered with three-straight points but the Bobcats controlled the momentum of the set and used a pair of 3-1 runs to build a 17-10 lead. With junior Tiffany Rohrer serving, Petrides posted two more kills during FSU's 4-1 run to give the Bobcats a 21-11 lead. A kill from freshman Zoe Harris gave Frostburg match point and Petrides hit home her 14
th kill of the match to give FSU a 25-12 victory and a three-set win over PSH.
The victory for the Bobcats was their first CAC win of the season.
Petrides led all players with 14 kills on the day while Torres handed out 31 assists and posted seven service aces. Rohrer led all players with 12 digs while Collins and Scepura each added 10. Harris, Roberts and Cheatem all chipped in six kills for FSU.
The Bobcats return to the court when they travel to Wesley on Oct. 18 for an 11:00 am CAC match.
