Field Hockey Victorious in Home Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team used two goals late in the second half to defeat Transylvania, 2-0, in the Bobcats home opener, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

Senior Alli Elliott got the Bobcats on the board with less than nine minutes to play in regulation taking a quick pass from sophomore Katie Farr right in front of the cage and scooting it past the Pioneer keeper to break the scoreless tie.

With less than a minute left on the clock in regulation, junior Becky Randel fed the ball to Elliot who had positioned herself perfectly in front of the net to put FSU up 2-0.

The Bobcats (1-2) had several scoring opportunities in the first half, out-shooting the Pioneers 12-0 but could not convert until late in the second.

FSU held a commanding leading in shots (23-0) and penalty corners (14-3). Randel led the attack for the Bobcats with eight shots, five on goal while Elliott was close behind with six shots, four on goal.

Transylvania goalkeeper Sara Aschbacher made 15 saves while suffering the loss. Senior Maggie Edwards earned her first win of the season in the net for Frostburg, not allowing a goal in the contest.

With the win, Frostburg advances to the championship game of the FSU field hockey tournament and will play Bridgewater (Va.) on Sunday at 12:00 pm. The Eagles defeated Bethany 8-0 in the second game of the afternoon to advance to the title game. Bethany will square off against Transylvania at 10:00 am Sunday morning.
